{"id":1449,"date":"2022-02-02T12:44:06","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T12:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/?post_type=kbe_knowledgebase&#038;p=1449"},"modified":"2022-02-02T12:44:06","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T12:44:06","slug":"using-attributes","status":"publish","type":"kbe_knowledgebase","link":"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/knowledgebase\/using-attributes\/","title":{"rendered":"Using attributes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"bkmrk-phplist-is-pre-confi\">phpList is pre-configured to deal with some data about your subscribers, for example, email address, the number of bounces (bouncecount), and their phpList ID number: these are called <strong>system values<\/strong>. <strong>Attributes<\/strong> are used for any other data you want to add to the system about your subscribers, usually demographic information. Some common attributes are Name, Age, Gender, and City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-once-you-have-collec\">Once you have collected\/uploaded attribute data, it can be used to connect to your subscribers more directly and with better precision, by using <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/knowledgebase\/using-placeholders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">placeholders<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong>segment plugin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-there-are-two-ways-t\">There are two ways to create attributes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"bkmrk-create-them-in-bulk-\"><li>Create them in bulk when you import a csv file<\/li><li>Create them manually from the configure attributes page<\/li><li>Edit them from the\u00a0configure attributes page<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bkmrk-creating-attributes-\">Creating Attributes when importing data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-when-you-import-comp\">When you import complex data using the &#8220;CSV with additional data&#8221; method, attributes can be easily created (in bulk) from column titles that are not already listed as an attribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-do-not-create-new-at\">Do not create new attributes for email and other system attributes, you must map those to the pre-existing system attributes listed in the dropdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-once-an-attribute-ha\">Once an attribute has been created, any column headed with the attribute name in future CSV files you import will be mapped to the attribute automatically. You will not need to create the attribute again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-if-there-is-new-data\">If there is new data for a pre-existing subscriber, it will be integrated into the subscriber details by using the email address or Foreign Key as a reference.<br>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bkmrk-creating-and-editing\">Creating and editing attributes on the Configure attributes page<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-to-create-or-edit-an\">To create or edit an attribute manually, go to <strong>Config<\/strong> > <strong>Configure attributes<\/strong> from the main menu.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"303\" height=\"361\" src=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image.png 303w, https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image-252x300.png 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-from-there-you-can-c\">From there you can create a new attribute:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image-1.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image-1-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/www.phplist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/image-1-768x353.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-%C2%A0-1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-you-can-also-edit-ex\">You can also edit existing attributes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.org\/manual\/uploads\/images\/gallery\/2019-06\/shDzt7CxHjmz2wQZ-Screenshot-from-2019-06-26-14-06-37.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.phplist.org\/manual\/uploads\/images\/gallery\/2019-06\/scaled-1680-\/shDzt7CxHjmz2wQZ-Screenshot-from-2019-06-26-14-06-37.png\" alt=\"Screenshot-from-2019-06-26-14-06-37.png\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-you-can%2C\">You can,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"bkmrk-specify%2Fchange-the-n\"><li>Specify\/change the name<\/li><li>Choose\/change the&nbsp;<strong>Type<\/strong>, which dictates the input method on your subscribe pages (see the example edit below)<\/li><li>Choose\/change the&nbsp;<strong>Default Value<\/strong>, which dictates the standard value on the subscribe page (you may need to change this on the Subscribe page editor too)<\/li><li>Make the attribute required, so subscribers must give the information in order to sign up (warning: mandatory fields may deter subscribers)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-additionally-you-may\">Additionally, you may<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"bkmrk-tag-them-to-delete-o\"><li>tag them to delete one or more attributes<\/li><li>tag to merge several attributes together<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bkmrk-example-edit-1%3A-chan\">Example edit 1: changing the type from text line to select&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bkmrk-in-this-example-we-w\">In this example, we will change the <strong>Type<\/strong> of the attribute for <strong>ShoeSize<\/strong>, which was automatically created during a CSV file import, from <strong>textline <\/strong>to <strong>select<\/strong>. This will affect the order in which they are listed in the dropdown on the subscribe page.
